World of Warcraft Beginners Guide

If you know people that play ask them what server they are on. That is a great start and you might even get some help from them. There are three types of World of Warcraft servers role-playing, player vs. player, and normal. There are also role playing/PVP servers too.

What is an RP server?

An RP server is a role playing server. This server type is for people who want act in character and immerse themselves into the game. You generally want to create a storyline for your character. Other than that the game server offers the same quests and objectives. This type of server has strict character naming conventions and in character rules. Keep in mind it is harder to find groups for quests and keeping a guild together is much harder (I will discuss guilds below). You can create characters of both factions on the same server.

What is a PVP server?

PVP stands for player vs. player. You are hostile at all times to opposing factions (alliance vs. horde). There is a spin-off server that will include role-playing and player vs. player. The servers are the same but you face a difficult challenge when leveling to kill other faction players or protect yourself from them. Only safe places are the major cities for each faction. Even then you still can get attacked if they other faction decides to attack the city or town you are in. You are encouraged to group even for simple leveling so that you do not get attacked as much. You can not create characters of both factions on this type of server.

What is a normal server or what is a PVE server?

A normal server is a server without role playing or PVP combat. Players have no naming restrictions than the usual ones and you do not have to be in character. This conventional server type is the best for leveling and resources. A player can choose to flag PVP and attack other players but you are not flagged all the time like you are in a PVP server. You can create characters of both factions on this type of server.

Once you have chosen a server you need to pick a faction or side.

Do I choose Alliance?

The alliance is made up of Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, and Draeni. Each has its own racial ability and its on special class. Picking the alliance does not mean you are picking the good guys. There are no good guys or bad guys in World of Warcraft.

This faction also has it own flight paths, major cities, towns, and starting areas different from the Horde.

Do I choose Horde?

The Horde is made up of Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, and Blood Elves. Each of these races has there own racial ability and their own special classes also.

Once you pick a side and class you begin in a starting area.

The starting area consist of quest givers, vendors to buy and sell, repair vendors to repair your armor, class trainers, and profession trainers.

What is a starting zone?

Starting zone is the beginning place for the race and class you picked. It has quest givers and trainers. This area gets you used to playing the game. One big difference is that the monsters in the starting zone do not attack you. You have to attack them. Once you venture out of this area they will attack you more.

What is the yellow exclamation point on the screen?

The yellow exclamation point is a quest giver. Simply click on the quest giver and read the quest. The quest will ask you kill something or collect something - complete it and turn it in. Once it is completed go back to the person and you will see a yellow question mark. Simply talk to the quest giver again and hit the complete quest button. You will be awarded any combination of items, experience, and wow currency.

There are vendors in the game that allow you to purchase food and drinks, armor, and allow you to repair your damaged items. It cost game currency to purchase items and repair to be careful when starting out not to spend all your silver pieces at once.

What can I sell to the vendors?

You should sell all gray items to the vendors. Use the auction house if you want to sell your white , green, blue, and purple colored items.

Can I send items to other characters?

Yes you can you can use an in game mailbox to send items to other characters that you have or other characters in the game. Most mailboxes are located next to inns. If you see that you getting cloth armor - send it to your mage or priest to use.

What is a class trainer?

Class trainers train your character every two levels of gained experience. You should train every even numbered level and you will get stronger with more powerful spells and abilities. It cost money to train so be wise on which skills you choose. Leave yourself some to repair. Be sure to put you new learned spells or ability on your bar. You can drag and drop the icon for the spells or abilities from your spell book onto your action bar.

What is a profession trainer?

A profession trainer will train your character in any of the professions that you choose.

What profession do I choose?

When starting out I recommend choosing two gathering professions. You can sell the items that you gather for a much greater price on the auction house (explained below). It does cost money to train to be wise on how much you train.

How do I get more bags?

Bags are the lifeblood of World of Warcraft. Bags allow you to carry more items thus saving you time from running back to town to sell. You start out with one 16 slot bag, and have four more slots for bags depending on which class you chose. When you make your first gold go to a major city and look at the auction house for bags. Other people playing will put bags at the auction house and you can purchase them. You can also pick some up along the way while you questing but they are going to be small. I recommend purchasing at least 4 ten slot bags but look at the prices and compare. You will want to keep upgrading until you have all 16 slot bags. That will be good for leveling. There are bags with more slots than 16 but they will be really expensive.

What is a flightpath?

When you arrive in a new city look for the flightmaster. The flight master will give you a flightpath. This will make it easier to get from point a to point b with out walking thus saving time.

What is a hearthstone?

A hearthstone is an item you get when you first start out. It returns you to the place where you last saved your hearthstone too. You can always get a new one if you talk to an innkeeper, and you can always change the location of the hearthstone if you talk to an inn keeper.

What is an inn?

An inn is the play you go when you are finished playing the game. If you log out in a major city or an inn you will receive rested bonus.

What are talent points?

Talent points start at level ten. You accrue a talent point for each level gained. It allows you to specialize your character in certain abilities. You can read more about classes and talent points at www.thottbot.com. Be careful when putting points into talents because if you mess up it cost gold to unlearn them.

Help I am stuck on a quest.

Have no fear if you can not find the person you are supposed to talk to use www.thottbot.com, just type in the name of the quest and it will pull up the information on it. It is a very good site to learn about quests and items in World of Warcraft.

What is a guild?

A guild is a group of adventures that join together to share resources and information. If you are not in a guild you might be asked a lot to join one. Take your time when choosing a guild, ask questions like do they help out lower level characters, what is the purpose of the guild, and if it is on a role playing server - what lore is behind that guild. Another good question is to ask how many people are in it and how long has the guild been around? Finding out if there are a lot of people in it with active lower characters that you can group with is another perk you can get from being in a guild. All guilds have names and tabards. Take a look at the tabard to see if the spent some time designing it. Check to see that if you join if they will supply you with some better bags and a tabard. Always a good policy not to ask for gold.

What is the auction house?

Think of the auction house as an in game eBay. You can put up auctions of items to sell and you can also purchase armor, weapons, bags, and recipes too. You can make more in game money but using the auction house, than selling your stuff to the vendor. Best times to sell stuff are on the weekend when more people are playing. And you will make more gold when look up the item you want to sell to see what the going rate is. You can put up white, green, blue, and purple items. White items are recipe items and sometimes will bring a good price in the auction house such as ores and herbs.

Is there a bank?

There is a bank that you get. You have to go to a major city to access it but if you receive items that you can not use now or want to save for later then you put them in the bank. You can also add bags which will give you more slots in your bank but you must purchase these with gold.

What is the guild vault?

Same thing with the guild vault, you can share resources and if it is set up properly everyone will be able to access it and deposit items in it. The guild vault is usually located next to your personal vault in the major cities.
