Find your dream job!
1) Make sure you have an updated phone number, email, and
address. I always align this information on the right hand
side. You be surprised how many people have outdated
information on their resume.
2) Education comes next. You can put you are a
pending student but its better to put your degrees earned. If
you have a great GPA 3.5 or better add it also only if you think it
will help. (I can tell you that most people do not even ask
about GPA) Put the University you attended and the date
graduated or anticipating graduation.
3) Next comes the job history. Only put relevant jobs
on the resume for which jobs you are targeting. I.E. do not
put you were a cook at Wendy's if you are applying in the
engineering field. 3-4 employers / jobs are all that you need
but make sure you again are using the experience you have obtained
to target the right job for you. If you have gaps between
employment, just explain it. "I took some time off for
college".
4) Put the most present applicable job first with the dates
you worked. Make sure you list the company information in
which you worked for also.
5) Start each sentence off with an action verb (look up
some example action verbs here
. Always list the most important duties and goals obtained.
Make yourself stand out but prepared to back it up! Make a
bullet list so it is easier on the eyes. You should have 5
bullets for your first job, 4 for your second, and so on.
Below is an example of what it should look like:
Jan 2001 - Present Jackson Engineering, Bluebillick Montana
- Reached sales goals of $100,000 per week.
(Hint: Read the job description and use some of their
words)
6) Try not to use the same action verbs twice, and double
check to make sure your bullets are targeting the job you want.
Each bullet should be clear and concise and summarize your
accomplishments. I do not go over one line per bullet.
7) I never add a summary of skills or references on the
resume. I think it looks tacky. You should always be
prepared to relate you skills to the job you want. You never
know when you hand in your resume if the person that is making the
decision to hire is the one you are talking too.
8) Employers will usually ask you for references and if
they do have a separate page ready for them. It is ok to tell
them not to contact employers. But be prepared to tell them
why they can't be contacted. If you are currently employed you
should not have them contact you current employer.
9) Include a cover letter. Providing a targeted cover
letter that explains some accomplishment or training will be a huge
plus. Make it easy to read. Career
Builder has a great cover letter that you can fine tune and make
your own.
10) Always follow up, smile, and keep fine tuning your
resume. Keep a folder of sales or certificates that you have
obtained through the years so that you can bring them to the
interview!
