Tip Spotlight - Renter's Insurance Tips

Renters insurance tips, Insurance company tips and what the insurance companies do not tell that you should know!

Renters insurance can save you in a bind.  Remember its not always yourself or kids you have to worry about - it can be friends and neighbors that can cause disasters in the home.

Renters insurance is worth the small monthly payment to protect your items from fire, theft, floods, earthquake and other home disasters.

Renters insurance can pay for hotel stay or even pay you if you stay with friends or family during the time you are displaced so ask if your policy covers staying with friends and family and you might get some extra money during this time.

Renter's insurance can pay for meals and any food that was lost during the disaster.  Not only can you get a per diem on food per day for you and your family.  But you can get reimbursed for food items lost due to unthawing or no electricity to refrigerate.  Those items should be separate from the per diem.

Keep your receipts for items you do replace.  You will need them insurance companies will not reimburse you otherwise.

Make a spreadsheet of replacement cost for lost items.  Put the highest price not the sale price to replace the items since the insurance company reimbursement could come after the sale ends.

Pets can be stabled if you can not find a hotel or friend to take you in with them and the insurance company will pay for that.

Claim every item in your house even the toothpicks and turn it in before your deadline.  The insurance company will tell you that the items that are damaged can be claimed but what they wont tell you is that some policies give you up to two years to replace your stuff that might not be damaged right away.  Make sure you turn in every item in your house so that you are protected for the next two years.

Disaster recovery places are great and will clean your items that are salvageable and return those items to you in almost new condition.

Make sure you keep a copy of your policy handy and if something is walking a line as far as replacement or reimbursement write the insurance company a letter explaining why you think you should have it replaced or reimbursed.

Make your meals were your staying it can eat up the per diem quickly and you might even gain weight due to stress and eating out.

If the whole family is affected by the disaster try to use one method of payment whether its a cc or checking account.  Its easier to track what your are spending.
