Tip Spotlight - Public Speaking Tips

Command presence with these tips!

1)      Define your audience – once you figure out who your audience is, (such as age, gender, race, religion, and culture) you are well on your way to delivering that perfect speech.

2)      I cannot say this enough – make sure you have a strong introduction.  Start off with a joke, or a story that grabs attention.   Your introduction will make or break you in the first 30 seconds.

3)      Walk into the audience – do not hide behind the podium.  It will also keep the audience awake!

4)      Do not turn off the lights.  You will put your audience to sleep.  If you have to just turn off the front lights.

5)      Recite your speech in the mirror or with a friend.

6)      Keep your audience involved.  Ask a question and tell them to answer with a show of hands.

7)      Keep their questions for the end.  Make sure you let them know up front you will be taking questions at the end.

8)      Bring a glass of water.  If you lose your place – you can always drink some water and find it again.

9)      Make sure you equipment, slides, or whatever you are using is working and available on the day you are giving your speech.

10)   Practice, Practice, Practice.  The more you practice the more comfortable you will become giving the speech.

11)   Do not look at people in the audience directly; look at the top of their heads.

12)   Look around the room.  If you are standing to one side make sure you are involving the audience on the other side of the room.

13)   You presentation should only guide the audience.  Make sure all information is relevant and flowing.  You should be the main information giver.
