Tip Spotlight - Negotiating Raise Tips

Earn the income you want with these easy to follow tips!

1)      Make a list of what is important to you.  Things other than money that might be missing from your job, such as healthcare, days off, daycare expenses paid.  This will allow you to be more flexible in negotiation.

2)      Do the research; get a list of wage averages and benefits to present to your employer.

3)      Have you cut costs for your employer?  Write down your list of accomplishments so that you can stand out and make yourself valuable.

4)      Double what you are wanting.  Often employers want to only give you half of what you ask for.  Make sure you start out high and you can always negotiate down.

5)      Shop competitors in your career field to see what they are paying.  Your employer might be more inclined to pay you more if their competition is paying more.

6)      Improve your skills and education through any training offered from your employer.  Make sure you are increasing your skills – it makes you more valuable.

7)      Having a review does not mean you are getting a raise.  If you have a great review – do not be afraid to ask for a raise.  The employer will be in a better mood to give you a raise.

8)      Make sure you are taking advantage of everything your employer is offering that you can.  If they have programs that pay for higher education then use it.  Your employer will be less likely to give you a raise if you not using all the resources.

9)      They might not be able to do a $3.00 raise all at once so set a plan to accomplish some goals for them and along the way they can bump your salary.

10)  Is a bonus in order?  Sometimes asking for a bonus and not raise will benefit you since the employer does not have to worry about paying you hourly.
