1) Shop Around - who has time anymore? If you make
time shopping around can save you money (I save at least $700.00 a
year) on items that I purchase every week. Make a list of
items that you purchase regularly and compare with Kroger's, Fred
Meyers, Safeway, Wal-Mart, Albertson's, and Cars.
Use the regular everyday price instead of sale prices. Add up
the totals and go with the one that will save you money. Make
a separate column for sale price and see if one stores sale price is
actually lower than another's everyday regular low price.
2) Plan out your meals. If you plan out your
meals you can stick to a budget better. Keep a list of
what you will need to purchase. This will allow you to focus
your purchasing.
3) Never shop when you are hungry. You tend to
spend more if you are hungry.
4) Compare "cost per" - if you have two brands
that are of similar quality, compare the cost per ounce, per
pound, per whatever to see if you are paying more for one than
the other.
5) Be aware of the 8 for $10 specials. Often you do
not need to purchase all 8 items to get the $1.25 price.
Grocery stores are getting tricky by packaging multiple items for a
higher price. Another example is Cereal. Often Cereal is
priced 2 for $5.00. Snack chips are and soda are other
examples. Check the tag to see if you can get the same price
for 1 item.
6) Bring a specific amount of cash with you. This eliminates
overspending and picking up to many of one item.
7) Check out the coupons when you are in line.
Coupons can save you money. After you are finished shopping
check the store flier to see if anything you purchased is on sale
with a coupon. Most stores such as Costco will have fliers at
the end of the counter for you to peruse while you are being checked
out. If you check out the coupons before hand you might
purchase stuff that you really do not need - thus overspending.
8) Are rewards really worth it? They can be -
after you decided store A is less expensive overall than store B,
sign up for their rewards program.
9) Purchasing in bulk does not always save you money.
I really do encourage you to look at the price per lb, or price per
whatever to see if you are really saving money. Most
case you are but you also are spending more money. Plus if you
have a membership fee, that can up the over price of the items.
10) Ask for a cash discount. Some stores still offer
a cash discount or check discount instead of Credit Card. See
if your store has one. It could save you between 1-3%.
