Tip Spotlight - Difficult Manager Tips

Managers can make or break you in a company and having one that is insanely difficult is not good for anyone.

What more do you have to do to please your manager?  I can't talk to my manager?

1)  Understand where the manager is coming from - it could be coming from the top down, could be having a bad day, or the companies performance could be effecting the mood.

2)  Talk to your manager and see if you can work out you problem.  Often miscommunication can lead to tension between two employees.

3)  Ask other employees if they have had difficulty dealing with the manager and if they have advice on getting on the good side.

4)  Make sure you correct the things that are asked of you and not just for two weeks.

5)  If talking to your manager directly and does not work talk - to their boss.  Have another manager sit down and meet with both of you to go over the differences.

6)  Get human resources involved - if your company does not have one then document the situations you are in so when you do have a chance to talk to someone you will have documentation.

7)  If a manager is unprofessional in any manner ask them to stop right away or you might have it keep happening to you.

8)  Go to lunch with the manager to find out what is important to him or her.  The more information you have and know the better you can focus on what the manager thinks is important.

9)  If others in the company are having problems with the manager - ask them to go forward and make a complaint.  More people that complain about the manager will bring attention to the opportunity.  Be prepared to back up your complaint with documentation and take any heat on your performance issues.

10)  When in doubt - you should be happy in your job, not so all the time with the people you work with but if you are miserable it might be time to get out while you can.  Instead of quitting make sure you have a job lined up.
