Tip Spotlight - Apartment Renting Tips

How do I find and apartment?  Apartment Renting Tips.  Here is what to look for when renting apartments.

1)  Check the classifieds, Craigslist, and apartment finder books for different listings of apartments.

2)  Talk to you friends, they might know someone who is moving.

3)  Drive the area you want to live in.  You might find a place that is not listed in the ads.

4)  Talk to the neighbors of the place to see what the landlord and area is like.

5)  Check the crime rate, and sex offender list in the area you want to live.

6)  Often times you can find a place close to where you want to live for less money - be patient.

7)  Be prepared to offer more if you find a place you like just in case others are looking.

8)  Find out what utilities are paid for if any, if you do not have utilities such as electric or heat paid for call the power company and find out what the average bill is for the apartment.

9)  Do not rush into anything but be prepared to sign the lease on the spot.

10)  Be wary of high pet deposits - you are likely not going to get them back.

11)  Write down all the damage or spots you see - take your time to make sure you note everything wrong so you won't have to pay for it later.

12)  If you do some yard maintenance will they knock of some of your rent?  Always good to find out.

13)  Find out what school districts the apartment falls in and the bus routes if any?

14)  See how well they do background checks or if they just rent to anyone.

15)  If they price is higher than similar apartments in the area - bring them flyers and proof and they might just knockdown the rent!

16)  Be careful when signing a lease - they might say 12 month but they will do a 6 month lease if you ask.

17)  Always purchase renters insurance - accidents do happen and if you live around others your risk goes up.

18)  If you can get an end apartment or one in the middle you will save on heating cost because you will be insulated from the top and bottom apartments.

19)  End units will have more windows and views.

20) Parking, Parking, Parking.  No need to say more.  Make sure there is enough parking so you dont have to walk a ways to get to your aparment.
